What Can I Do to Prepare For the US Citizen Test?

Preparing  to become a US citizen is a significant milestone, and knowing how to prepare for the US citizenship test is an important l step in this process. At Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, we offer an extensive citizenship program designed to help refugees and other eligible populations prepare effectively for the test. Most English Language learners need about three months of study time to prepare for the Naturalization test and interview.  Here’s how you can make the most of our resources and ensure you're ready to pass with flying colors:

  1. Understanding the US Citizenship Test

The US citizenship test, officially known as the Naturalization Interview and Test evaluates your knowledge of U.S. history and government, as well as your ability to speak, read, and write in English. The test consists of two main parts: the English test and the civics test.

  1. English Test

This includes reading, writing, and speaking components.

  1. Civics Test

You will be asked up to 10 questions from a list of 100 possible questions about US history and government, and you must answer at least six correctly.

2. How to Prepare for the Citizenship Test

  1.  Enroll in Our Citizenship Program

Our Citizenship Program offers free in-person and online classes available Monday through Thursday in the afternoons. These classes cover all aspects of the test, providing a structured and supportive learning environment.

  1. Utilize Practice Tests

Taking a practice test for citizenship is one of the most effective ways to prepare. US citizenship test practices help you familiarize yourself with the format and types of questions you will encounter. Regularly testing yourself will build your confidence and identify areas where you need further study.

3. Learn U.S. History and Government

A significant part of the US citizenship test is understanding U.S. history and government. Our classes provide lessons on  these topics.These lessons help you to learn  key facts and concepts that are likely to appear on the test. We use resources such as books, online materials, and educational videos to support your learning..

4. Practice for the Citizenship Interview

Know the answers you gave on your Naturalization application form. The citizenship interview is a vital component of the naturalization process. The questions in the interview will come from your own application. Our program reviews your application with you and includes mock interviews to help you practice. These sessions simulate the real interview, giving you a chance to practice answering questions confidently and clearly.

5. Schedule Tutoring Sessions

If you need additional help with the US citizen test, we offer tutoring with an instructor by appointment. This one-on-one support can help you focus on  specific difficulties  you may haveand help you to improve. .

Class Schedule and Eligibility

Our classes are designed to be flexible and accommodating. They are available both in-person and online from Monday to Thursday in the afternoons. To be eligible for our citizenship classes, participants must be refugees or be from other eligible populations, including asylees, special immigrant visa holders, Cuban entrants, and human trafficking victims.
