What are the Best Thanksgiving Assistance Programs?

October 25, 2024

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, togetherness, and sharing a warm meal with loved ones. Yet, for many families in Southern Nevada, the rising costs of food and inflation make it challenging to celebrate. Fortunately, organizations like Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada (CCSN) provide vital support through food assistance programs that ensure everyone can enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner.

Catholic Charities’ Annual Turkey Drive: A Lifeline for Many

One of the most impactful Thanksgiving food assistance programs in the region is CCSN’s annual Turkey Drive. As economic challenges continue to affect vulnerable populations, CCSN is stepping up to address food insecurity. This year, we are looking for donations of frozen turkeys and other Thanksgiving staples to provide meals for struggling families, in need individuals, and homebound seniors.

How the Turkey Drive Works

  • Donations Accepted: Community members can drop off frozen turkeys and nonperishable items like boxed potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green beans, canned yams, and cranberry sauce at CCSN’s campus (1501 Las Vegas Blvd. North, Las Vegas, NV 89101) from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
  • Meeting Demand: The Hands of Hope Food Pantry is preparing to serve over 150 families daily, ramping up to 250 during the peak Thanksgiving season.
  • Preparation in Action: From October 21–25, CCSN’s kitchen staff will roast turkeys, cook side dishes, and package thousands of meals to ensure no one is left behind during the holiday.

Serving the Community with Warm Thanksgiving Meals

In addition to distributing turkeys, CCSN hosts its 59th consecutive free Thanksgiving meal this year, serving 700 low-income individuals and vulnerable men, women, and children. For seniors unable to leave their homes, CCSN’s Meals on Wheels program will deliver 2,450 specially prepared holiday meals, doubling their usual capacity.

These initiatives are part of CCSN’s year-round commitment to offering food assistance near you for those in need, regardless of race, religion, or creed.

Ways You Can Help

Catholic Charities’ mission is only possible through the generosity of the community. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Donate: Drop off frozen turkeys, canned goods, or funds to support meal preparation and distribution.
  • Volunteer: Sign up for service opportunities at Catholic Charities’ Volunteer Hub.
  • Spread the Word: Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to contribute to this essential cause.

Why Thanksgiving Food Assistance Programs Matter

For families facing tough choices between paying for utilities, housing, or food, Thanksgiving food assistance programs provide not just sustenance, but also hope. As Deacon Tom Roberts, CEO of CCSN, stated, “Even the smallest donations of food, funds, or volunteer time can make a world of difference for those in need this Thanksgiving.”
