Learn how it all began.
Bishop Thomas K. Gorman Pioneers a Social Service Organization
Bishop Gorman knew that Nevada needed support, so he assigned Father Thomas F. Collins as the first diocesan director of the Catholic Welfare Program.
The Agency is Incorporated Under Nevada Statutes
The organization acquired a nonprofit status and dedicated itself to helping the homeless and needy.
Catholic Community Services of Southern Nevada Continues to Expand
The organization grew to offer thrift stores, a child care center, and the St. Vincent Dining Facility.
Population Growth Doubles and the Organization Grows Further
New programs emerged to help senior citizens, refugees, immigrants, girls in crisis, homeless men, individuals needing employment services, and people who needed emergency shelter.
Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada is Born
The organization changed its name from Catholic Community Services of Nevada to its present-day moniker, reflecting our outreach to Clark, Esmerelda, Lincoln, Nye, and White Pine counties.
Catholic Charities Rebuilds St. Vincent Plaza
With the help of a $2.5 million grant from the Lied Foundation, we constructed the St. Vincent Lied Dining Facility. At the same time, we were generously awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Fertitta Foundation and built the Fertitta Community Assistance Center.
Catholic Charities Builds Apartment Space
Through our partnership with New York-based HELP USA and a $2.7 million HUD grant, we constructed a 120-room apartment building. The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation provided a grant for $10.4 million to rebuild additional structures.
Serving Those in Need During a Pandemic
Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada found new ways to adapt during the pandemic so that we could continue helping vulnerable individuals. This included constructing an outdoor pavilion to provide daily meals and day shelter services.
Building a Brighter, Better Future
In 2021, we focused on the sustainability of our mission by renovating every day use spaces, with the goal to enhance services for the valley’s ever-growing population and needs. Renovations took place in the Dining Room of the St. Vincent Lied Dining Facility, the Emergency Men’s Night Shelter, and a major renewable energy installation.
Elevating Humanity
Planning, Demolition and Renovations took place for the Migration & Refugee Services programs to relocate and utilize a new building asset on our campus.
Improvements are in progress for an expansion of the Food Services Warehouse and will be followed by renovations of our employee use areas with future plans for renovating the existing buildings and future campus assets.
Catholic Charities’ mission is designed to help vulnerable people from infants to seniors gain self-sufficiency with dignity and compassion, regardless of religion. In order to carry out our mission, Catholic Charities employs on average 250 full-time and part-time employees and utilizes volunteers. With their generous gift of time and talent, volunteers enable Catholic Charities to help even more. By blending the support of individual donors, local and federal government and benevolent community partners, Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada will continue vigilantly planning and preparing for the future needs of Southern Nevada as it has done for the past eight decades.
